Twitter Tips for the Overwhelmed for the Solo-Based Pro

August 28, 2010 by admin

Twitter has become one of the most useful business-building tools out there. It’s quick and easy to use. And it’s powerful. The power of Twitter lies in the ability to build relationships and create conversations with followers and the people who you follow. But it can seem overwhelming and ‘just one more thing to do” So here are a few very short tips to get you in the swing.

Rule #1 Don’t spend more then 15 minutes a day on Twitter!
You can have a high ROI without a lot of time on Twitter. I encourage people to use the Twitter widget in and iGoolge dashboard so that you don’t drown in Twitter’s site. This widget pulls your tweets in every 3 minutes so it stays up to date, but there are no other distractions. You can just dip over to see what’s going on and get right back to work. It makes a nice break. You can scan what your people are chatting about, jump in if you choose, or tweet out a comment, short survey and be on your way. Spread your tweets through out the day to get the most exposure – but do not linger.

Rule #2 Do not Sale!
There are many ways to use Twitter but the number one no-no is hard sales. Nothing annoys people more than having someone constantly blasting sales pitches at them. This is not a commercial. It’s a relationship building tool. Here are some things to tweet about to stay in your follower’s good graces:

•    Share job opportunities or client needs
•    Share useful or interesting links
•    Share links to your blog posts, articles, events (that’s OK, just don’t be a used car salesman)
•    Offer support
•    Offer community
•    Share an a-ha moment
•    Share a feeling
•    Ask a “have you ever…” question – start a conversation
•    Ask for resources…”what’s the best…?”
•    Share a laugh
•    Share a quote
•    Share a vent, pet peeve, nervous tick…
•    Do a tip of the day

Rule #3 Know who to follow
People of all sorts are going to follow you. That’s part of the fun of Twitter. But to make the best use of your time, choose who you follow carefully. I know a lot of people do an automatic follow in return when someone follows you, but that didn’t work for me. For some bizarre reason a lot of real estate people started following me and they really do a lot of sales tweets so I had to go back and unfollow. So be strategic. Here are a few ideas on who to follow (tip: you can search by keywords for people to follow:

•    People who hire freelancers
•    People who know people who hire freelancers
•    People who outsource to other freelancers
•    People who share the same ideas and interests
•    People who have to potential to collaborate on ideas
•    People who inspire you
•    People who you find funny, interesting, …

Rule #4 Remember: Relationships & Fun
That’s really what social media is all about, creating relationships, sharing your expertise, and having some fun.

The final caution:
Do not tweet anything that you do not want a room of about 150 people to hear. I’m just saying…

Twitter Tips For Freelance Writers

August 26, 2010 by admin

Popular trends online in 2009 are social networking and anything else related to Web 2.0, a label used to describe advanced internet technologies such as blogging, RSS (really simple syndication) feeds, and member communities that users join to connect with other people who may have similar interests. In fact, according to a report from Nielsen Online, social networking and blogging are more popular than sending email. More than two-thirds (67%) of the global online community now goes online to visit social networks and blogs. At this moment, Twitter is the social networking darling, with hundreds of people joining daily. Recent data show that in one month, the number of Twitter users grew by 33%. If you’ve heard of Twitter, but discarded it as irrelevant for freelance writers, think again.

As a microblogging platform, Twitter’s free service enables users to send out short snippets of no more than 140 characters (including spaces). These updates, called Tweets, go to your followers and also appear in the Twitter timeline. Twitter began as a vehicle through which friends, family, and coworkers could communicate and stay connected by exchanging quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing? Twitter has evolved as Twitter users learned that every Tweet counts (and nobody wants to hear about what you’re eating for lunch). Today, you’ll find more valuable content and less useless information about what someone’s doing at one particular moment in time.

What can you get out of Twitter?

Traffic: Use your Tweets to drive prospective clients to your website, where they can read your bio and see samples of your work. You do have a website, don’t you?
Connections: Use Twitter as a tool to connect with others in your industry or related industries while increasing awareness of your personal brand. You never know who might be reading your Tweets. As with other social networking sites for professionals like LinkedIn or Biznik, social networking contacts often lead to other connections that can generate new freelance clients or employment opportunities. To get Twitter followers and make connections, you need to follow people. Use the “advanced search” function to find Twitter users in your area of interest, follow them, and comment on their posts using the @replies or direct message functions.
Resources: Twitter offers you a steady stream of ideas, links, resources, and tips. Follow people in your areas of interest and they’ll lead you to interesting resources you might not find yourself. I found the earlier link to the Nielsen Online report through a Tweet.
Skills: The challenge of Twitter is to write a Tweet using no more than 140 characters. In the Twitter world, you need to write tight or forget it, which gives you an opportunity to hone your writing skills.

What should you Tweet about? The best way to optimize Twitter is to become a filter, teaching your followers mini-lessons and updating them on topics of interest in your area of expertise. The key is to provide followers with information of value. Don’t bombard them with constant self-promotion.

Keep in mind that Twitter is a very “noisy” place. By that I mean the volume of Tweets is enormous. As more people follow you, the volume increases substantially. Since you can Tweet from your computer or your mobile phone, some users send dozens of Tweets each day, which only adds to the noise. The noise level does have an up-side: you can repeat your Tweets, since your followers will probably miss some of your updates, given the number of Tweets they need to filter through.

Social Media Recruitment: Advance techniques to reach out to candidates on Twitter and beyond

August 22, 2010 by admin

As a recruiter how can you reach out to a potentially large candidate pool on social media space in a short span of time? The answer is in carefully crafted social media strategy.

Link your social Media Accounts
As a recruiter build your professional profile carefully on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. A strong presence in these 3 social media forums are an absolute must if you want to taste success in social Media Recruitment. Linking up your networks is even more important as it allows maintaining uniformity across social media networks.

It may seem a little daunting to start with but with but maintaining all 3 networks can be automated in such a way that if you do a Twitter update it will automatically update your statuses in LinkedIn and Facebook  saving valuable time and energy. Both Linkedin and Facebook offer Twitter widgets and all you need to do is to activate the widgets to link all your 3 accounts together. Once you link up your Twitter account with Linkedin and Facebook you are ready to move to the next level.

Create your Blog Site for Job Posts to harness RSS Feeds
Do I need a blog? The answer is no if you have applicant tracking system which generates RSS feeds for your jobs and offers a job publishing platform. If you don’t have system to rely on than a blog can become an indispensible tool for your recruitment process.  Blogs can be used as a remarkably cheap platform to publicize your jobs and hundreds of smart recruiters are doing so. So go ahead and create your blog. Build your profile on your blog carefully with links to your Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Make sure the banding is uniform across all 4 platforms. The best approach here is to keep things simple and professional to start with. You can always add bells and whistles as you grow confident. And yes there are ready-made widgets to integrate your social media profiles with your blog and can be unearthed with a little research.

All popular blogging platforms (Blogger, Word Press, Typepad etc to name a few) generate RSS feeds. The innocuous RSS feed are most effective form of content syndication on the Internet today and offers limitless possibilities in spreading your content on the internet.  We need to harness RSS feeds to reach out to a larger audience. Once build your blog and start posting, your blog site with generate your RSS Feed.  There are many ways to publicize your feed:

You can submit your feeds on all major search engines; you can integrate them on Feed Directories. And you can integrate your RSS feed into your social network which is what I will focus on this article.

Use FeedBurner to auto publish your blog RSS feeds as Tweets
Create a FeedBurner (www.feedburner.com ) account and burn your feed to make your blog feed RSS reader friendly.  After you burn your Feed use the FeedBurner tools to optimize and publicize your feed. To publicize your feed FeedBurner offers a  gem of a feature called socialize which integrates your RSS feed with your Twitter account. The interface is simple and intuitive and can be activated with a few clicks! The system allows you to send your blog feeds to your twitter account in 1 hr intervals in a twitter friendly format.

Now you have created a system where the moment you post your jobs on your blog the post will be automatically fed into your Twitter account as Tweets via FeedBurner .  Once your feed is published on Twitter your already linked accounts on Linkedin and Facebook will automatically pick up the tweets and publish them as your status updates. In other words all your connections across 3 major social networks can view your job posts as status updates with a link to click on. This in turn which will lead them to your blog to view your jobs and apply. Now you are ready to move to Level 4.

Moving beyond your network using Twitter
Now you have created a system to publicize your jobs across your Twitter Linkedin and Facebook contacts.  Is there a way to move beyond your network? Social Networks tend to grow organically depending on how aggressively you are building them and your jobs can spread quickly via viral mode to a larger network of 2nd and 3rd degree contacts.  You can move to an audience beyond your network with the help of a few twitter tools.

Create an account with http://www.twitjobsearch.com/ and integrate your twitter feed. You Job tweets will become part of a large twitter job platform and will reach out to thousands of followers beyond your network.
Also use http://www.twitterjobcast.com/ all you need to do is use the word hiring in your job titles. Twitter job cast will automatically pick up your posts and publicize on twitterjobcast.com. As a strategy start your job posts with the word hiring and use the position and location in a tightly constructed blog title. Example “Hiring Mortgage Sales Officers in San Francisco, CA”.
You can also explore the following paid services as part of your broader outreach strategy: http://twitterjobs.org/, http://tweetmyjobs.com/ and http://tweethopper.com/

Closing the Loop
Now you are reaching beyond your networks and effectively closed the communication loop for effective social media recruitment.

This article at best lays a very basic foundation of what can be achieved in social media recruitment. There are hundreds and twitter tools out there and possibilities are limitless.  You can refer http://www.twitglry.com/  OR  http://www.feedmyapp.com/ to experiment with social media tools and to move your social media recruiting strategy forward.

What Exactly is Twitter and Should You Be Using Twitter For Business?

August 12, 2010 by admin

Twitter, twitter, tweet, tweet everywhere! It seems that almost overnight Twitter burst onto the scene and created quite a stir. At first, it seemed ridiculous that little short one-liners about inane things would be anything I’d want to involve myself with as a business owner. Well, I changed my mind, and I’ll tell you why.

First, Let’s Define Twitter
In simple terms, Twitter is a free service that allows one to say just about anything to anyone else in 140 characters or less. It’s referred to as “micro-blogging.” You go find people you want to follow and click on their “Follow” button and they usually click back on your “Follow” button, and it goes from there. It’s not like Facebook, in that you don’t even have to have a clue who these people are to follow them. Usually with Facebook, you start off with your family, friends, business colleagues, and it may grow from there. But not with Twitter. My general rule with Twitter is that I’ll follow anyone who isn’t being illegal, obnoxious or offensive. And I periodically go through manually (there are tools for this) and “Un-follow” people who have not followed me back, unless there’s a compelling reason to leave them on my active list. So that’s Twitter in a nutshell.

Is Twitter a Waste of Your Time?

So, the real question is why you would use Twitter. If you look at it on the surface, it really can appear to be a colossal waste of time. And it can be. Before you answer the question of whether or not you should use Twitter, it may be beneficial to analyze your objectives.

Reasons I Use Twitter

The best way to help you answer the “Twitter” question is to share with you the reasons I choose to use Twitter on a regular basis.

1. I find it is a valuable way to network and connect with other people in my line of work who have similar interests.
2. I have learned to quickly scan through those short little “Tweets” and stay in touch with business thoughts and ideas.
3. With all the links that are available in those brief 140 characters, I have access to a much broader and deeper knowledge base.
4. I find a steady stream (I sometimes refer to it as a rushing river) of ideas, links, resources, content and valuable tips.
5. Some of my current customers have found me on Twitter. Maybe they saw one of my Tweets, clicked on the link, read a blog post, and signed up for a free webinar, and then purchased a product. This is not uncommon.

Now, before you would decide to use Twitter for your business, you’d need to identify at least one compelling reason from my list above. If you can identify that reason, then start to focus on how you can learn to use Twitter to that end.

In closing, Twitter is not learned in a single day, or even a week. It’s a process that evolves over time. But it’s a good idea to get started if you think it’s right for you.

I have produced a quality eCourse on how to make Twitter work for you. I invite you to check it out here:

Top 6 Twitter Applications for your Business

Marketing on Twitter has actually turned out to be the most influential and easy-to-get-result thing ever. All over the world, businesses are being promoted in a very less time with greater outcome due to Twitter Real-Time service. You should have your brand’s profile over this social media network, and you will see yourself in a new horizon for advertisement.

Business holders are already busiest creatures, so lesser time is always a mercy for them. Business applications were introduced for targeted and cost-effective marketing. There are several hundred business applications out there on Twitter, and every app claims to be the best when it comes to track and manage your business on the platform of Twitter. But in my humble opinion, one Twitter app will not be enough for your business because of the wide range of needs and requirements. I have gathered 6 highly beneficial Twitter apps for business that could influence your advertising and eventually your niche market.

HootSuite

This Twitter app Hoot Suite helps you in updating and scheduling your updates through multiple mediums, using multiple accounts. You will add multiple HootSuite users in your HootSuite and give them permission to tweet from your account, because one person can’t handle business’ networking, there have to be few more. It allows you to make group tweets in accordance with users or filter tags into different columns. It is quite similar to Tweetdeck, but Tweet deck has been developed for Normal users while HootSuite is the business customized.

TwitterCounter

This is very useful and easy tool for measuring performance on Twitter. TwitterCounter has widgets that allow you to use your website or blogs to show case your social media presence and online visibility through its high end analytic features. Also, it has fine dashboard that will let you know the growth in your followers, following your tweets and Tweet counts.

TwitHawk

TwtHawk is a paid Twitter app that charges nickel for each tweet. It helps you to target your tweets and to make a set up a keyword to track particular tweets and make auto respond tweets. It is sort of controversial though, but when it comes to using it as marketing channel, I don’t see any harm using in it.

TwitterFeed

TwitterFeed is an excellent way to feed despite its controversial fact of ‘feed is spamming’. It is the oldest and mostly used feeder that boosts up Twitter marketing for any brand in a speedy manner.

TwitterSearch

TwitterSeacrh is basic searching tool that allows you to get total control over your search items. It helps you to keep track of your searching things. If you use advance search of TwitterSeacrh, then you can build your own personalized tool to track your business activities.

Trendrr

Tendrr is social media brand tracking guru for your business management tasks. It keeps all track of the live web search, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. It is a paid Twitter application with entirely different scheme. Trendrr has a complete dashboard and reporting system in it to make things faster for your business

Which Twitter applications do I use to build my site?s audience and visitors?

August 8, 2010 by admin

So I came across this Twitter application website:

http://www.rachel-levy.com/confused-by-all-the-twitter-application/#Topify

As having a brand new baby site, it seems Twitter is my primary source of visitors right now. That got me intrigued to find out about some these Twitter applications. The top ones that came out as described at this site include (as described by the author Rachel):

Socialtoo – This program allows you to do multiple things:
0. Received an email telling you who followed you and who unfollowed you the day before, and what you tweeted before that happened
0. Autofollow people
0. Opt out of auto DM’s (they used to offer an auto-DM service, but no longer do)
0. Conduct surveys
The only part of the program I use is the first one… Socialtoo emails me every day with who followed me and unfollowed me yesterday. I usually scan quickly to see if there were tweets that are particularly popular or unpopular, so I can notice a trend. I also look to see who unfollowed me, so I know that they are no longer following.

Topify – This is one of my favorite applications! What this application does, is makes your email work much better for you with Twitter. When you receive an email about a new follower, instead of being without any information about the followee, it will include their bio and basic stats. And, directly from the email you can follow the person! It also allows you to reply to a DM directly from email.

Tweepsearch – Similar to Twellow, this program searches bios for a particular keyword. But, it can also search the bios of your followers only, which can be very useful.

Twellow – A search program that also searches bios, names and locations. It also has a graphical interface that enables localized searching. VERY useful, if you are trying to find someone, or target particular people.

TwitPic – Allows you to easily post a photo on Twitter. Just browse to the photo, and it creates a link. It’s built directly into Tweetdeck, so it’s easy to use from there!

Twitter Search (formerly Summize) – A mandatory for Twitter users. Type in any search term (including AND, OR, quotes) and see what’s happening on Twitter for that search. Also shows you trending topics. Clicking on “Advanced” lets you get more detailed in your search, including tweets from one person to another, date, attitude and place.

Tweetdeck – I can’t say enough about this program. Basically, Tweetdeck shows your Twitter feed in columns of information based on your preferences, rather than one long stream. For example, I use the following columns: All tweets, bostonmarketer, direct messages, friends, thought leaders, companies, twitter stuff, and jobs. This allows me to keep a better eye on things that interest me. You can click to see anyone’s profile, and from there add them to a particular column. It has a URL shortener build in, which is invaluable. I find this useful for my job search as I keep columns of job search twitter id’s.

Here are my thoughts, anything that involves search is mighty fine by me. There are so many applications listed but I would only focus on those that are most useful for any person who sends out Tweets. I have seen lots of notices on Tweetdeck so I might give that one a shot too. Twellow might come in handy for searches. I think Socialtoo and Topify might be the most useful but I will definitely let you know about my thoughts which ones work. Hey, I may even do a review for y’all.

Social Media Goldmines – Facebook and Twitter

August 6, 2010 by admin

Facebook. Twitter. The names might sound silly, but their power is anything but. Social media web sites are the face of the Web 2.0 marketing revolution. They work on a simple networking principle: word of mouth. You create a profile and invite your friends to subscribe to it. Then they invite their friends, and pretty soon your messages are being sent out far and wide to a receptive audience.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can use Facebook and Twitter to share your business with the world.

Facebook

Facebook has over 150 million active users, and is among the top 100 most visited web sites in the world. It allows people to join networks and add friends who share common interests. It also lets you share personal and business information with friends in your network.

To join Facebook, go to Facebook.com and enter your e-mail address, password, and date of birth. You’ll soon receive a confirmation e-mail. Once your address has been confirmed, you can start searching for your friends and joining networks. Your own profile can be customized by clicking “Profile”, “Info”, and then “Edit Information”.

Facebook allows you to share links, videos, pictures, messages, and status updates with everyone on your friends list. You can even play games and send virtual items to your friends. Remember, Facebook is where people go to see the human side of your business.

Twitter

Twitter has been called a mini-blog, and for good reason. Users send out continuous updates, or “tweets”, in 140 characters or less. Because it’s so easy to use Twitter over cell phones, updates can be sent from anywhere – airport terminals, clubs, sporting events, and even the dentist’s office. Using Twitter is like having your own reality show with millions of potential viewers.

Twitter is even more user-friendly than Facebook. To get started, go to twitter.com. Choose an easy user name and password, and then choose whether or not you want to import the contacts from your Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail account.

Next, you’ll be brought to your home page. Enter a message in the box at the top of the page, and click “Update”. That’s all you have to do to start tweeting. Later, you can click on the “Settings” tab at the top of your home page to fill in your profile details.

You can use Twitter to announce new blog posts, share tips, and answer people’s questions. If someone “follows” you, follow them back. You can send private tweets to people, but your public tweets can be seen by all of your followers and all of their followers. This makes it possible to cultivate a good audience in very little time. You can even add a Twitter widget to your Facebook page.

Social Networking Etiquette

Why are Facebook and Twitter so popular? For one thing, they’re personal. You can learn a lot about a person by reading their profile, following their favorite links, and learning about their hobbies and interests. Also, they are interactive communities that bring people together. In this age of Internet marketing, people want to talk with a real person rather than receive generic messages from a faceless corporation. Social networking lets you connect with your audience on a new level.

The golden rule of social networking is to just be yourself. Don’t spam people with ads for your business, and don’t bore them with generic messages. Get to know them, and they’ll soon spread the word about the valuable services you offer.

Greg Mangin (G-man) is a professional engineer and a top network marketer coaching a team of profit conscious entrepreneurs to make an income from home.
